It definitely isn’t a must-read but its a lot of fun and gives the spotlight to a Batman character that is usually just used as a side-piece.

It’s the first story in the canon where he has played a significant role. Additionally, it serves as a really good character introduction of The Riddler. We learn what her greatest fear is and what she truly thinks about several characters that she comes across throughout the story. However, it is really important to understanding Selina Kyle as a character. In terms of impact on the Batman mythos, this might not be the most significant volume. However, the saying “curiosity killed the cat” begins to ring true as those who have something to hide try to keep it that way. While in Rome, she tracks down several leads and with the help of The Riddler starts to put together the pieces of a hidden conspiracy. Catwoman, The Riddler, Scarecrow, The Joker, Two-Face, Batman, and a hitman named “Blondie” make appearances throughout these issues.įeeling that she may have a deeper connection to Carmine “The Roman” Falcone than those around her suspect, Selina takes a much needed vacation away from Batman, Bruce, and Gotham to search for answers. The story takes place in Rome after Catwoman leaves Gotham to pursue the truth about her past.

When In Rome would definitely be considered canon as it takes place during Catwoman’s time away from Gotham during the events of Dark Victory. As I’ve said before, its hard for me to say anything good about Sale that I haven’t already said and it is even harder for me to say anything bad. The art in this series didn’t stand out to me as “spectacular” like it did in Sale’s previous work but it is consistent at the least and very good at it’s best.

In 2004 writer Jeph Loeb and illustrator Tim Sale follow up their work on Batman: Dark Victory with When In Rome which includes Catwoman: When In Rome issues #1–6.

This week we are going to look at something a little different as we make our way through The Ultimate Batman Chronology.
